Millions of People Affected by Windows 7 End of Life

When Microsoft released Windows 7 in 2009, they committed to providing product support for the following 10 years. Believe it or not, it has already been 10 years, and Microsoft has recently announced that on January 14, 2020, they will no longer provide technical assistance or software updates to Windows 7. This announcement has left many people dismayed, as even as recently as last year Windows 7 was the most popularly used Windows version in the world.

What’s the big deal?

When you run computer software that is supported, typically that software will run periodic updates. These updates will fix any new glitches or issues found with the software and will provide security updates to keep your personal information as safe as possible.

Although your computer may seem to work just fine after the “end of life” date of January 14, 2020, choosing to use outdated software could leave your computer susceptible to unresolved glitches, new computer viruses, and hackers attempting to obtain your personal information.

How can I tell which version of Windows I currently have?

For computers, it is fairly simple to determine which version of Windows you are running. If your Start menu has a search function, simply type “winver” into the search bar. A pop up box will appear displaying the Windows version. If your computer doesn’t have a search bar, you can go to your “Settings”, select the “Systems” option, and then choose “About”.

Support for Internet Explorer on a Windows 7 computer will also go away.

Microsoft has been pushing their Edge browser when they came out with Windows 10, but there are plenty of people who prefer Internet Explorer. According to Microsoft, support for Internet Explorer on a Windows 7 device will also be discontinued on January 14, 2020.

How can I upgrade my computer to Windows 10?

In order to upgrade your device to Windows 10, you will need to purchase and install a full version of the software. In the past, Microsoft had offered a free upgrade, but that offer ended in July 2019. Unfortunately, the only option at this point is to purchase a new device with current software already installed, or purchase and install an upgraded version.

What if I use Windows 7 embedded systems in my point-of-sale terminal?

For now, Microsoft has not send an end of life date for their Windows 7 embedded systems. However, it is probably a good idea to plan an upgrade as soon as possible.

What if I use Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Enterprise?

Unlike those who use the Home or Pro versions, Microsoft has agreed to allow these software users to extend their security updates to January 2023. However, users who wish to extend these updates should expect to pay a fee for the service.
